- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to teach the students to deal with foreign propria both when translating and when creating original texts containing foreign propria.
The course is primarily focused on transmission of proper names from Czech into Russian and vice versa.
The listeners will know about what methods of proper name transmission exist and which methods are appropriate for each type of propria and texts.
The students will be, besides other things, introduced to the principles of practical transcription and technical transliteration of Czech and Russian proper names in written foreign/Czech text and to the rules of grammar adaptation of the Czech propria in the Russian language system.
The listeners will be able to use gained knowledge and skills when translating and preparing original technical, informative, advertising and artistic texts of regional and supra-regional character.
During the course authentic texts from the fields of journalism, belles-letters, technical texts and tourism will be used so that the learners will acquire the broadest overview on the issue. - Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to independently determine which method of transmission is appropriate for the particular type of propria and text; to appropriately use this method;
- to independently transcribe or transliterate the foreign proper name both from Russian into Czech and vice versa;
- to choose the most appropriate transcriptinal or transliterational standard for the particular type of the text;
- to involve the proper name that is transcribed to morphosyntactical relations of the object language (to adapt and to decline the proper name);
- to decide and to give reasons weather to adapt the proper name or to form feminine noun from masculine and vice versa in particular type of the texts. - Syllabus
- - The issue of translation of the vocabulary without equivalent.
- - Historic and political circumstances of Cyrillic adoption and the usage of Latin in Russian environment.
- - The classification of proper names, types on translated texts (juridical and administrative documents, artistic translation, journalism, tourism, advertisement), functions of proper names in the text and the principles of their transmission following from it.
- - The particular systems and methods of transmission and transcription of proper names (onymic transformations): transcription, transliteration, graphic transplantation, calquing, deonymisation, addition, double transmission, onymical and etymological substitution, usage and consensual transmission, hybrid method, adaptation, morphologization, parts of sentence’s substitution.
- - The issue of chrematonyms transmission (rules of transmission of Czech/ Russian institutions, organizations, products of spiritual and material culture to Russian/Czech).
- - The issue of transmission of anthroponyms and theonyms; problems of foreign anthroponyms declination; forming feminine anthroponyms from masculine ones; anthroponymic parts of other names.
- - The issue of transmission and declination of toponyms, orthographic rules for foreign toponyms notation.
