Course objectives
The lecture and the discussion form of teaching will be employed. The lecture deals with the history of the frech speaking theater in Canada from the beginning till the 1980's. The readings and the analysis will touch such autheors as Réjean Ducharme, Gratien Gelinas, Marcel Dubé, Claude Gauvreau, Jacques Ferron, Anne Hébert, Michel Tremblay and others.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- to orientate in the history of French-Canadian and Quebec drama and theaters
- analyze the aesthetic and social context of theater plays
Syllabus
  • 1. Situation up to 1760 and changes after 1760 2. Theatral life and new institutions at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century 3. Transformation period 1930-1960. Creation of great and small theatres and of a specific French-Canadian dramaturgy 4.The Quiet Revolution in the 60's and 70's, social and politic function of the theatre 5. Posmodern otherness: gender, homosexual, immigrant and fist nations themes
