Course objectives
The course offers an overview of the history of Spanish literature from its origins to the 18th century. Special attention is paid to the key periods that have marked literary history, focusing on the most important authors and their representative works.
Learning outcomes
Establish a first contact with the history of peninsular literature in Castilian Spanish, basically the literary canon. To learn to relate literary texts to the time and place in history in which they appear. To learn to comment on literary texts. To see/reflect on how they connect with our present and contemporary forms of subjectivity. Classes and seminars are in Spanish, so that vocabulary and discursive competence are significantly broadened.
Syllabus
  • Attendance is not compulsory, but the participation in the seminars of each topic as well as in the seminar dedicated to Lazarillo counts for 30 %.. Each class is divided into two parts: lecture and seminar. For the programme, please refer to the interactive axis (interaktivni osnova). The course offers a historical overview covering the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque periods, through to Neoclassicism and the literature of the Enlightenment. During the course, students read and discuss texts selected by the teacher, as well as other interactive materials. It is compulsory to read El Lazarillo de Tormes, and it is recommended the participation in the discussion of the book, which takes place during the seminars at the second part of the semester.

  • Para preparar los temas con vistas al examen final o SZZ, los estudiantes dispondrán de un resumen muy básico de los mismos, pero pueden usar también cualquier manual al uso.

Lecture, seminar, text commentary, discussion.
Assessment methods
In order to pass the course, students must pass an oral examination (70 %). Participation in the seminars for each topic as well as in the seminar on Lazarillo counts for 30 %. During the course, texts selected by the teacher as well as other interactive materials are read and discussed. The reading of El Lazarillo de Tormes is compulsory, and participation in the discussion of the work, which takes place during the seminars in the second half of the semester, is recommended.
