Course objectives
The objective of this course is to provide students with elementary knowledge of Galician culture and civilization. The Galician language will be characterized, as well as basic notions of this language will be taught. It is also intended to take a tour through the history of Galician literature, the external history of the Galician language, and the history of Galicia. In addition, the course will show the Galician cultural panorama and the main references and works in various artistic or cultural expressions (music, cinema, audiovisual content, architecture, gastronomy, etc.) without neglecting the folkloric manifestations, cultural traditions, and the current Galician socio-cultural situation.
Learning outcomes
The student will: - learn basic notions of what the Galician language is like. - know the Galician literary panorama from its beginnings to the present. - understand and acquire knowledge about the current socio-cultural situation of Galicia and Galician, as well as other related essential aspects (geography, history, folklore, etc.). - value and know the current cultural panorama and the Galician past through different arts (music, cinema, other audiovisual content, architecture, gastronomy, etc.) and its main references and works.
Syllabus
  • Introduction. Galicia and Galician. 1.1 Galician language. Basic notions. Galician alphabet. History of Galician and Galician. 2. Geography and culture of Galicia (gastronomy, festivals and traditions, sports, Galician socio-cultural situation, etc.). 3. Literature and other arts (plastic arts, dance, folkloric expressions). 4. Galician audiovisual (music, cinema, television, etc.).
Teaching methods
Lectures and viewing/reading of content at home.
Assessment methods
The student must write a short original essay related to one of the topics presented in class (for example: about the Galician language, a writer, gastronomy, a music group). Attendance and participation in class is required.
