- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to discuss the history of Czech opera in Bohemia and Moravia from the Diploma of October 1860 to to the First World War. It will include an overview of the most important operas by Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák and Zdeněk Fibich and operas from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The course will confront the most recent Czech musicological literature with the views of three English musicologists - the Englishmen John Tyrrell and Geoffrey Chew and the American Michael Beckerman. At the same time, we will touch on the directorial trends of the last two decades as far as these operas are concerned, not only domestically but also in Europe and overseas.
