Course objectives
The course goal is knowledge of outer history of language contacts among Indo-European languages and Vietnamese together with the study of borrowed lexicon. Main donor languages were French, English and Russian. Some lexical units were created or borrowed as calques through/via Chinese and Japanese mediation. Main focus of explanations: typology of phonetic differences among languages, ways of creation of new words, and definition of main semantic fields of borrowings. The course offers systematic classification of borrowed lexicon in relation to the content of compulsory courses in the programme.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course a student will be able to:
- describe history and sociolinguistical data related to language contacts among Vietnamese and Indo-European languages
- name donor-languages with main time of contacts
- describe typical phonetic differences between donor-languages and Vietnamese as well as give examples
- describe main means of creation of new borrowings
- enumerate main semantic fields of borrowed lexicon with examples of loanwords

  • Semantic fields of French loanwords in Vietnamese
  • Semantic fields of English loanwords in Vietnamese
  • Semantic fields of modern Russian loanwords and borrowings from other European languages
  • Phonetic adaptation of contemporary Indo-European proper names (personal names and toponyms) in Vietnamese
  • Additional topic: phonetic adaptation of older place names from Hinduized (Indianized) states of Central and South Vietnam

Assessment methods
Students of the study programme Vietnamese Studies: 1) in the two thirds of the course: written test - at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass for final written examination; + 2) final written examination: at least 70 % of correct answers is required to pass the course. Students of other study programmes: only final written examination is compulsory: at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass the course.
