Course objectives
The course goal is to explain various historical layers of Chinese words and loanwords in Vietnamese language. Each layer has special phonetic features according to specific time of use or borrowing. Other indicators are main semantic fields of Sinovietnamese vocabulary related to sociolinguistic data and outer history of language contacts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course a student will:
- be able to distinguish the oldest, classical, and modern layers of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary
- know phonetic development of Chinese language
- know main semantic fields of particular layers
- know outer history and types of contacs between Chinese and Vietnamese languages

Assessment methods
Students of the study programme Vietnamese Studies: 1) in the two thirds of the course: written test - at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass for final written examination; + 2) final written examination: at least 70 % of correct answers is required to pass the course. Students of other study programmes: only final written examination is compulsory: at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass the course.
