Course objectives
The seminar will aim at problematizing the black-and-white attitudes toward popular culture both on theory and praxis.
Syllabus
  • The first half of the semester will be devoted to theory, the second half will mainly concern with reading and interpreting fictional texts. In selecting the theoretical texts it was not possible to avoid texts in English and German (the knowledge of these languages is not necessary for being able to take part in the seminar). The excerpts from fiction were mainly chosen from Czech translations of foreign authors, mainly because the Czech popular literature is not enough illustrative.
  • The authors who will be dealt with (texts will be specified): D. Hammett, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.G. Ballard, K. Čapek, E.A. Poe, J. Weiss, W. Gibson, J. Škvorecký
