Course objectives
Oedipus Rex is has long been esteemed as a model of tragic literature and as a masterpiece. The lecture will reflect various aspects of this drama - the content of the drama and its construction, Czech translations of the drama, the history of the theme before and after Sophocles, modern interpretations and various approaches to staging.
Syllabus
  • 1. Reading Sophocles. 2. Czech translations (from Končinský to Havrda-Borkovec). 3. History of interpretations. 4. From Seneca to modern adaptations (Racine, Shelley, Hofmannsthal, Cocteau, Dürrenmatt, Kundera, Daněk). 5. Homo Faber (novel by Frisch, film by Schlöndorf). 6. Staging of Oedipus (from Vicenza to European theatres). 7. Czech staging of Oedipus( from Jakub Seifert to J.A.Pitínský).
