Course objectives
The aim of this lecture is to define a set of musical dramatic manifestations. These manifestations on purpose dissociate from dramaturgic norms of the traditional genres (opera, musical drama) and the aspire to bring in a new kinds of musical, design, linguistic as well as kinetic components into the structure of drama. The lectures will in paricular concentrate on the period after 1950 when new compositional techniques emerged and when there was a radical change in apprehension of the nature of music theatre. Widely differentiated tendencies of the neo avant-garde, the possibilities of audio-visual technologies anr the development of mass media cause, especially in Amerika and Western Europe, that there are more and more attempts to combine music and scene in new ways. The lectures will deal with the production ranging from the forms that emphasise musical quality of music over instrumental theatre and anti-opera to extreme forms like happening and multimedia productions. We will attempt to look at these tendencies in the context of the social situation and the development of theatre in the second half of 20th century.
