- Course objectives
- The lecture will instruct on the development of textology from the 19th century onwards and also on the development of a codex for preparing critical and popular editions. It will try to learn the distinction between texts and to identify the authentic one. The stress will be laid on the interpretation of rules which modern textology operates with and on editor's work during preparations preceding the publishing of a text.
- Syllabus
- 1. Basic characteristics of textology. Literature concerning the field of study and its evaluation. 2.-5. Brief account of the historical development in textology. The rules of editing work and their development. The main representatives and editions in history and in the present. The contemporary stage of research in textology. 6.-9. Text, text sources (their collecing, different types of sources, deciding on authorship). 10. The primal text and the ways of working with this text. The characteristics of authoritative text. Definitive text of an author, definitive text from the point of view of its genesis, functioning of a text in society. 11.-14. Different editions of a text: scientific edition, popular edition, edition ad usum delphini. The precise characteristics of scientific edition will be stressed.
