Course objectives
Prolegomena to the connoisseurship, one of the principal methods of the work of arthistorian in museum, in art collecting, in art trade and in the care of historical monuments.
Syllabus
  • Basic topics:
  • 1. Aims and limits of the connoisseurship?
  • 2. Historical and stylistic critic.
  • 3. Problems of attribition and datation of paintings.
  • 4. Genuine or false? (original, copy, replic, false, workshop work).
  • 5. History painting, portrait, landscape, still life, genre.
  • 6. Origin and history of art museums.
  • 7. Principles of museum work.
  • 8. "Old great men" of the connoisseurship (B. Berenson, A. Bredius, W. von Bode, Th. von Frimmel, M. J. Friedländer, V. Kramář and others.
