Předpoklady studia: orientace ve světových náboženstvích, znalost základních pojmů a systému obecné psychologie, psychologie osobnosti, psychopatologie, vývojové a sociální psychologie.

Course objectives
The course is aimed at providing the general review of psychological approaches to different religions and to show possibilities how to analyse religious phenomena.
Syllabus
  • 1. Subject of the psychology of religion. Psychology of religion as a independent religionist discipline. Psychology of religion as a part of psychology. History of the psychology of religion (representatives). Methodological problems 2. Problem of general definition of religion. Crypto-religion, pseudo-religion. Basic dimensions of religion from psychological point of view. Doctrine, myth, ethic, rites, rituals, religious experience, community. Magic, myth, folklore, fairy tale and their relationship to religion. 3. Function of religion in human life. Personal relationship with sacred and supernatural. Psychological, psychohygienical , psychosocial and psychotherapeutic aspects of religious effect. 4. Psychological structure of religion. Sacral and profane. God, gods, supernatural powers and entities. Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic image of gods. Monotheism and polytheism. Hierophania, theophania, chaos and cosmos, cosmogonia, consecration of a place, symbolism of the middle, opposites of earth and heaven. Concept of human and his salvation. Life and death, good and evil, heaven, hell, eden. Myth of eternal return. 5. West and east tradition. Christianity. Psychological aspects of Buddhism. Zen Buddhism. Taoism, Confucianism. 6. Communication with supernatural. Prayer, contemplation, meditation. Mysteries and mystic. Types of religious experience. Specific religious phenomena: transcendence, emancipation, reincarnation, vision, ecstasy, miracle. Religious phenomena as objects and subjects of experience. 7. Exhibitions of religiosity, religious life of believers, ritual, cult, liturgy. Participation in ceremonies, social and psychological role of sect and church. Leader and member of religious group. 8. Sin, guilt, forgiveness, atonement. Suffering, destiny, success, happiness. Psychological roots of fundamentalism. 9. Psychopathology and religion. Obsession and exorcism. Madness in history. 10. Sigmund Freud and C.G. Jung (basic religion-related theories)
