Course objectives
The course will be a 'pot pourri' of speaking, writing and vocabulary-based activities designed mainly to improve (or at least maintain) the student's general level of fluency and to increase his/her vocabulary. The writing component will aim to raise the student's awareness of how easy it can be to write inaccurate and unnatural-sounding English and the great care needed to produce simple and effective English texts.
Syllabus
  • Components of Syllabus: 1. Three writing assignments a) Short newspaper report - writing economically and to a given formula b) Letter of complaint - informal/formal style c) Short non-chronological description - varying sentence length and structure 2. Vocabulary - approximately 150 items in context 3. Collocations - 30 items 4. Various communication activities 5. Grammar reinforcement - e.g. inversion
