Course objectives
It is the aim of the lecture to explain Plato`s conception of beauty. The exposition should provoke a reflection on the relevance of Plato`s account of beauty for contemporary estetics.
Syllabus
  • - exposition of Plato`s "second voyage", i.e. of his theory of Ideas and of first Principles (Phaedo, 96a-102a) - specificity of the Idea of Beauty in respect to other Ideas (Symposium, 198a-212a, Phaedrus, 246a-257b) - connections between Greek art and Plato`s theory of Ideas and first Principles (G. Reale, Toward a new Interpretation of Plato, ch. 10, apendix to ch. 10)
