Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are the following: making students understand Platos conception of beauty as the highest idea; making students understand the essential link between Platos philosophical theory of love and his account of beauty as the highest idea; giving students basic understanding of Platos theory of ideas and of his protology, i.e. which is the subjct of his so called "unwritten doctrines"; giving students a basic knolwdge of the Symposium, the Phaedrus, the Lysis and the Ion Students will acquire the ability to: read and understand Platos dialogues on beauty and love; explain the basics of Platos metaphysics, aethetics, philosophical anthropology, ethics and epistemology; explain basic hermeneutical approaches to Platos philosophy

  • - exposition of Plato`s "second voyage", i.e. of his theory of Ideas and of first Principles (Phaedo, 96a-102a)
  • - specificity of the Idea of Beauty in respect to other Ideas (Symposium, 198a-212a, Phaedrus, 246a-257b)
  • - connections between Greek art and Plato`s theory of Ideas and first Principles (G. Reale, Toward a new Interpretation of Plato, ch. 10, apendix to ch. 10)

Teaching methods
Every lecture requires homework preparation in reading the assigned study literature. After teacher's presentation of the general and particular features of the subject, students are guided to interpretation of the chosen extracts, and class discussions follow.
