Course objectives
The development of the ancient state from the sumeric times to the classical age of ancient Greece and hellenism.The differencies among the types of states and societies in the Ancient Orient and Greece.
Syllabus
  • 1. The differencies between a tribe society and the state.
  • 2.The state and society in the ancient Nesopotamia and Egypt. (The survival of some elements of the development in the Near East to the ancient civilisatins of Europe). The religion and law in ancient Orient. Social relations among the people living here.
  • 3. The oldest ancient states in Europe.
  • 4. Poleis of Greece, their civic society, the first democraties of the world and their limits; political ideas in ancient Greece.
  • 5. Old Persian monarchy and the monarchies of hellenistic empires; the first "globalization" of the ancient world.
