- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide the students with an introduction to the study of language and communication and to prepare them for the linguistic study of Czech language. The lectures will focus on terminology and methodology of linguistic research, focusing on variety of possible approaches. The lectures use the background of general linguistics, stressing the specific view of Czech studies, when possible. The course also includes information about standard Czech and foreign linguistic works relating to the topics dealt with. In an independent work students gain the experience with natural language processing for corpus purposes and with elementary skills relating to scholarly communication.

- Topics dealt with in the course include:
- 1) Language, linguistics, main approaches towards language, methodology, terminology
- 2) Origin of language
- 3) Differentiation of languages in time, language contacts
- 4) Classification of languages according to genealogic and typological criteria
- 5) Verbal and non-verbal communication, models of communication, functions of language
- 6) Sign nature of language
- 7) Synchronic vs. diachronic approach to language, language as a functional system (Prague School)
- 8) Language, norm, codification
- 9) Development of scholarly investigations relating to language a) the classical period to the early 19th century, b) historic and comparative linguistics, c) structuralism, d) pragmatic turn in linguistics
- 10) Czech language: development, territorial and social stratification, present-day language situation in the Czech Republic
