Course objectives
The course objective is to provide an insight into the ethnic development in the Czech Republic in the context of the Central European setting. The students will gain an insight into the ethnogenesis of the majority nation and ethnic minorities that used to live, or still live, on the territory of the Czech Republic. Based on the information received, they will be able to get a better understanding of ethnic issues that continue to play an important role in contemporary Europe.
Syllabus
  • basic technical terms related to issues discussed, Germans as the most important ethnic minority in the Czech Lands, Anabaptists and Jews, denomination-based minorities, Slavic minorities, Croatians, Poles, Gypsies – Roma, population census as the basic statistical source and transformation of the definition of nationality, development of the structure of nationalities in the population after World War 2, situation in the Czech Republic (from 1 Jan.1993)
