Course objectives
This course surveys the literary works in the region of historical Macedonia from the arrival of Slaves to the end of the 18th century, working with respective texts. It focuses mostly on Cyril and Methodius’s mission and the oldest Slavonic literary schools and their surviving works. We also look into the „golden age“ of Bulgarian literature, the origin and spreading of bogomilism, bogomil and anti-bogomil literature and the so-called „apocrypha“. Other topics include: medieval literary scriptoria and their prominent representatives, the spreading of the medieval religious and secular writing (medieval novels and short stories), folklore, damaskin literature, broadly popular in its time, and finally the works of Macedonian writers from the early 19th century (Joakim Krčovski, Kiril Pejčinović). The literary overview of the particular periods is set against the background of the general evolution of the Balkan Slavonic literature.
