Course objectives
Main objectives of this course: - to know (all) semantic paradoxes and to distinguish them from other kinds of paradoxes; - to understand essentials of main approaches to the rigorous explication of truth (i.e. the meaning of the truth predicate); - to know main approaches to the solutions of such paradoxes, with a special attention to the details of Russell's, Tarski's and Kripke's proposals; - to understand the explication of truth and solution of semantic paradoxes based on ideas of Pavel Tichý;
Syllabus
  • Key topics: - definition of paradox and its solution; influence of liar paradoxes to the explication of truth; some general classifications of paradoxes; - origins of modern paradoxes; Russell's paradox; logical vs. semantic paradoxes; basic features of Russell's solution; - Tarski's semantic conception of truth; - three-valued approaches to the explication of truth, in particular Kripke's proposal; - contextualistic approaches, dialetheism, revisionism; - Russell's ramified theory of types (and Vicious circle Principle) in details; - Tichý's notion of construction and his ramified theory of types; - the explication of truth based on Tichý's ideas; the solution of semantic paradoxes;
