- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to principal issues concerning the influence of the modes of communication and interraction on human thinking and on the forms of religion. The core issue of the course are questions of the difference between orally based and literate thinking and their relation to some issues of modernisation of religious traditions. Lectures are based on the active participation of students and on discussion.
At the end of this course, students should realise crucial influence of the forms of communication on the development of religious traditions and on understanding and religious interpretations of reality. Students should be able to explain the role of modern media (particularly printed media) in the development of modern forms of religiosity. They should thus be prepared for further investigation in the filed and for analysis of the role and impact of newer media (such as television, radio, internet). on contemporary religions. Simultaneously they should be able to reflect on the influence of the forms of communication in the science and the nature of sources scientists in religion work with on their understanding of the subject and to deal with these issues critically in the context of methodology. - Syllabus
