- Course objectives
- The course offers a basic information on the evolution of Christianity from its rise in the context of the late hellenistic world, passing through a progressive institutionalization and formation of orthodoxy during late antiquity to the history of Christianity in the Middle Ages up to the Reformation. The course aims not only at the history of Christian thought, but also at the evolution of institutions and cultic life.
The course provides a basic knowledge of the history of Christianity from the beginnings to 1500 A.D. At the end of this course, the students should: understand the basic lines of the earlier history of Christianity; know the basic terminology used in the study of Christian history; have the capacity of paraphrasing and analyzing of Christian source material; have the capacity of critical evaluation of different propositions about particular events and phenomena in the earlier history of Christianity. - Syllabus
- (0) Introduction to the course, conditions of completion. (1) Academic study of Christianity. Problem of the “historical Jesus”. (2) Rise of Christianity. (3) Orthodoxy and heresy in the ancient Christianity. (4) Historical evolution of Christianity in the 2nd-6th century. (5) Christian theological thought in the 2nd-6th century. (6) Biblical text, liturgical books. (7) Spread and differentiation of Christianity in the 4th-10th century. (8) Medieval monasticism. (9) Crusades and orders of knighthood. Evolution of the papacy. (10) Medieval theological and philosophical thought, scholasticism. (11) Orthodoxy and heresy in the medieval Christianity. (12) Evolution of the western Christianity in the Late Middle Ages.

Lectures, two written tests.
Completion
Two written tests (100 points each, less than 60 points = failed), final oral examination or colloquium. Oral examination compulsory for the students of the “Study of religions” study programmes. The examination aims also at the content of RLKB306 Proseminar for Christianity I (simultaneous enrollment recommended).
