Course objectives
The aim of the course is to discuss the development of the Arabian world and how it was affected by the preceeding civilizations of the Near East, by Greek and Roman culture and Christianity. The students will gain insight into the pantheon of the Pre-Islamic Arabic deities. This will allow him/her to see the roots of Islam and muslim civilization in greater detail and compare it adequately with the Christian civilization in Europe. Understanding Arabic culture in the Antiquity involves identifying its ties to other ancient civilizations rather than approaching to it in isolation. This in turn will help the student to explain the basic ethical and social values of the early Islam.
The first semester of the course deals with the oldest Arabian kingdoms in the South of Arabian peninsula and Arabian tribal societies. The relationship with Assyria, Persia, Palestine, Syria, to Greeks and Romans and to the Christianity is examined in the chronologicla order. The genesis of Islam and its earliest expansion are covered, too.
