Course objectives
The aim is to present to the students of Balkan studies the grammar systems of South Slavonic languages, mainly phonetics and word formation.At the end of the course students will - be able to demonstrate the knowledge of Slavonic phonetics. - have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of linguistics. - have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of comparative study of Slavonic languages - be familiar with Slavonic grammar - contrast and compare Czech and other Slavonic languages
Syllabus
  • Slavonic languages as a part of Indo-european languages. South Slavonic languages and their place among the other Slavonic languages: Phonetic system and specifics of the South Slavonic languages. Comparative South Slavonic morphology: noun, adjective, pronoun (Slovenian dual, Croatian and Serbian case syncretism, analytical declination in Bulgarian and Macedonian, definite article in Bulgarian and Macedonian...). 1. Preview of European languages 2. Slavonic languages as a part of Indo-european languages 3. South Slavonic languages and their place among the other Slavonic languages 4. General characteristics of phonetics and phonology, basic terminology 5. System of vocals in South Slavonic languages - contrastive view 6. Sonants in South Slavonic languages - contrastive view 7. Consonants in South Slavonic languages - oclusive consonants, contrastive view 8. Consonants in South Slavonic languages - semioclusive consonants, contrastive view 9. Consonants in South Slavonic languages - fricativeconsonants, contrastive view 10. Elements of supragsegmental level of language (stress, intonation) 11.
