- Course objectives
- This course will be devoted to the analysis and interpretation of Čapeks short stories. The course will follow the changes and developements of Karel Čapeks texts. We will focus on the themes, styles and structures of his texts. We will also try to create a typology of Čapeks short story. Another intention of the seminar is localize his short stories in wilder context of modern texts. In particular, the texts written by Richard Weiner, Karel Poláček, Jaroslav Durych. We will also confront the reactions of readers and critics alike. At the end of the course students should be able to follow the changes and developements of Karel Čapek‘s texts and analyse the themes, style and structures of his texts.

- 1. Short story as a genre. Basic information about Karel Čapek‘s life and work. 2. Krakonošová zahrada, Zářivé hlubiny. 3. Boží muka, Trapné povídky. 4. Povídky z jedné kapsy, Povídky z druhé kapsy. 5. Kniha apokryfů, Bajky a podpovídky. Summary of new information.

- Assessment methods
- The course is taught every other week. Students are to prepare one paper and read one scholar study and present them during the seminar. Active participation in following discussions, minimally 75% attendance.
