Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to describe the ethnogenesis of the German minority in the Czech lands and identify its traditional folk culture.
Syllabus
  • Outlining the history of German minority in Czech in the 13th century (big colonisation), 19th century – period of an increased national self-confidence transforming into nationalism of both the Germans and Czechs, WWI and foundation of ČSR – German minority in the new state, politics of parties defending the interests of German minority, separation of Sudeten areas in 1938, exile and expatriation of Czech Germans after 1945, Sudeten memory and forgettery, ethnography and folk culture in the areas of originally German settlements (border regions, language islands), persons of German ethnography – Adolf Hauffen, Gustav Jungbauer, Ernst Schwarz, Emil Lehmann, Josef Blau, Anton Altrichter and others, basic works of German ethnography and folk culture, periodicals, first information on the culture of Germans from the 18th and 19 century, features of folk cultures – spiritual and social culture features (folks literature, customs and traditions etc.), materialistic folk culture (housing, clothes, food, occupation etc.).
