Course objectives
The main aim of the research seminar is to find out more about the early widescreen cinema in Czechoslovakia, up to 1970. The seminar will be divided into two parts – during the first one, students will study existing texts on the widescreen cinema, especially those concerning the history of technology and style. In the second half, each participant will work on an analysis of a Czechoslovak widescreen film of his or her choice. Consequently, they will present their findings at the seminar meeting and write a paper.

The main objectives of the course are the following:
acquainting the students with the problematic of widescreen cinema;
getting familiar with the methods of statistical analysis of film style;
deepening the knowledge of Czechoslovak cinema;
acquiring experience with the work in a research group (discussion, presenting one owns findings, etc.).

  • Reading (literature on widescreen cinema, film style, and Czechoslovak cinema).
  • A film analysis (prepared individually).
  • Presentation of the analysis.
  • Writing the final paper.
