Course objectives
The aim of the course of Translation exercices is to make students acquainted with systematic training of translation methods and developing of language skills when translating from Czech to French. Students should be able to define basic stages of translation process and then he or she should be able to apply these stages into a concrete type of the text. At the end of this course, students will be able to analyse stylistic level of the original and to deduce where a difficult points for translation could occur.
Syllabus
  • Alternating focus on grammatical and stylistic translation.
  • Grammar-based practice translation into French, emphasis on correct usage of:
  • - Articles
  • - Pronouns
  • - Verbs
  • - Prepositions
  • Style-oriented practice translations into French, emphasis on correct usage of:
  • - Determining constructions
  • - Sequence of tenses and related differences in verb usage
  • - Expliciation of proper nouns
  • - Logical connectors, etc.

Teaching methods
Application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their theoretical knowledge and practical analysis of a specific text.
Assessment methods
Partial and final written exam (min. 60%) when students show their capacity of a translation of quality from Czech to French. Active participation and attendance is required (80%) as well as continuous submittion of translation exercices.
