- Course objectives
- Seminar combines presentation of the czech society and communist regime in 80s with practising and discussing of oral history as the approach in research of recent history in effort to make it familiar to the graduates. Lectures are accompanied by projecting of chosen film sequences presenting discussed issue and the way of its reflection compared with other kinds of sources.
- Syllabus
- History and memory. Everyday life. Reflexion of everyday reality at czech movies of the 80s, between propaganda and satire. Reflecting of everyday life vs. fixing the stereotype.
- Employment in „socialist“ Czechoslovakia. Relations and hierarchies among employees. Working moral. Employment and private life.
- Free time aktivities. Weekend, holiday, travelling. Free time aktivities organized by official institutions and organizations.
- Consumption and patterns consumerist behaviour under conditions of the central planned and controlled trade and distribution of goods.
- Private and family life. Life rituals. Celebrations.
- Regime controlled public rituals. Celebration of anniversaries and red-letter days. Its ideological backgrounds and real lived contents.
- Reflexion of West, unofficial culture, censoring and propaganda.
- Military service as a common experience.
- Reality of communist regime and its impact on language and its vocabulary.
