- Course objectives
- Theoretical-methodological seminar. The goal is to introduce students of different fields to the basics of theory of science. Students will learn to work with main methodological principles that need to be taken into consideration when writing scientific (i.e. also dissertation) works. Students will learn ways of argumentation and proof, current theories of science and methodology of scientific work and acquaint themselves with various models of explanation.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to the subject; science and scientific approach; aspects of science; science as a system of true statements (Horyna) 2. Basic terms; a priori - a posteriori, descriptive - normative, explication, etc. (Horyna) 3. How to explain a problem; explanation; description and prediction; types of explanation; models of explanation; pragmatic aspects of explanation (Jastrzembská) 4. Methodology of research: general research procedures, the role of scientific text, the role of the reader. How to shift from the theme to questions? How to shift from questions to problems? How to shift from problems to statements, from statements to reasons? (Picha) 5. Basics of argumentation: selected elements of theory of argumentation. What are the conditions of a valid argument? How to identify the structure of argument, how to find argumentative scheme? How are argumentation mistakes made and how to identify them? (Picha) 6. How to write: some specific skills related to writing a scientific text. How to create a plan of the text? What should the introduction and conclusion contain? What is the role of connectors and paragraphs? What to focus on when revising a text? How to create an abstract of a scientific text? (Picha) 7. Explanation and understanding: the role of hermeneutics in social sciences (Hroch) 8. Final test (Horyna)
