Course objectives

The students will meet the most important characters and problems of ancient philosophy in this lecture from Thales to Aristotle. In summer the lecture will continue as History of philosophy II - Ancient and Middle Ages.

After the completion of the course, students should be able to:
understant the basic problems; describe the thinking of the most important philosophers in the period from Thales to Aristotle.

• 1. The origin of philosophy and its relationship to the myth.

• 2. The Milesians.

• 3. Pythagoras.

• 4. Heraclitus.

• 5. The Eleatics.

• 6. Anaxagoras, Democritus.

• 7. The Sophists and an anthropological inverse in philosophy.

• 8. Socrates.

• 9. Plato:
  a) his life and works; b) some philosophical questions.

• 10. Aristotle:
  a) his philosophical development and his relationship to Plato; b) Aristotle's concept of the philosophical branches.

Teaching methods

Lectures and on-line homeworks.

Assessment methods

The form of the course is a lecture. The conditions of the completion of the course are:
continuous tests in the ELF (max. 127 p.) and the final paper (max. 100 p.). It is necessary to obtain at least 200 points together.
