- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
a) define basic topics of contemporary sociology of religions;
b) identify key processes of globalization;
c) interpret postulates of theory of reflexive modernization;
d) analyze topics of religious violence;
e) formulate own arguments about topics of position of religions in contemporary world;
f) compare key approaches to topics globalization.
The course concentrates on contemporary sociological theories of religions, with special emphasis on theories of globalization. The focus is on the question of transformations of religiousness towards the end of 20th century. Students are introduced into the development of sociological theory of religions that has from the 1960s shifted from the theory of secularization to the theory of globalization. Attention is devoted to significant authors and works in this field of sociological inquiry.
The objective of the course is mastering a) knowledge about contemporary discussion on the character of globality, the process of globalisation and the position of religion in contemporary world; b) ability to grasp chosen religious phenomenons in a global context. - Syllabus
