Course objectives
Main information about the history of Slovene literature before 19. Century. Historical and cultural context: Middle Ages. Literary folklore. The constitution of Slovene literary folkloristic. Reformation and the beginning of Slovene literature. Main authorities in reformation. Reformation as a cultural project. 17. Century: Baroque in literature: the development of prose, drama and poetry. Catholic literature in 18. Century. Clasicism. Pisanice od lepih umetnosti. The beginning of drama: Latin, German drama. A. T. Linhart. V. Vodnik. Historical ideas of that period. At the end of this course students would be able to interpret different periods of Slovene literature. They will have the main information about this period.

  • 1. Main periods and current in Slovene lit.. Middle Ages, cultural and historical context. 2. First Slovene manuscripts: Brižinski spomeniki, Stiški, Čateški rokopis. 3. Slovene literary folkloristic: first poetry and tales. 4. Reformation and anti- reformation. 5. Main personalities in the reformation. 6. Baroque in Slovenia. The development of prose. 7. The development of baroque poetry and drama. 8. Cultural and historical context of classicism. 9. A.T.Linhart. 10. 10.V. Vodnik. 11. Pre- romantics in the poetry of Valentin Vodnik 12. Historical ideas of the period 13. Conclusion.

Lectures combined with seminar discussions.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: attendance (2 absences per semester are allowed), written test at the end of the semester (minimum required: 60 %). Compulsory essay presentation.
