Course objectives
Basic geographic, political, social and economic characteristics of the Republic of Slovenia. The course provides an introduction to Slovenian life and institutions as well as to the political development and cultural specifics of the country. Students will be able to explain, analyze and compare situation and specifics of the Republic of Slovenia.
Syllabus
  • 1. Slovenia as a part of Central Europe. Topographically diverse country: the Alps, the Dinarides, the Pannonian Plain, and the Mediterranean.
  • 2. A brief outline of the Slovenian history: Slovenian lands as a part of the Roman Empire, the principality of Carantania, Slovenes in the Republic of Venice, the Habsburg Monarchy, the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (renamed to Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929); Slovenes in the Kingdom of Italy, Slovenia occupied by Germany, Italy and Hungary, and Slovenia as a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1945 until gaining independence in 1991.
  • 3. Slovenian historical lands and traditional provincies of Slovenia: Upper Carniola (Gorenjska), Lower Carniola (Dolenjska), Inner Carniola (Notranjska), Slovene Littoral (Primorska), Styria (Štajerska), Carinthia (Koroška), Prekmurje, and Bela Krajina.
  • 4. Population of Slovenia. Ethnic groups (Italians, Hungarians, Roma, immigrants form former Yugoslavia). Religion (Roman Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, Muslims). Changes in settlement patterns, migrations, demographic trends, mass migration from Slovenia from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century.
  • 5. Slovene minorities at the beginning of the 21st century: in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the Austrian states of Kärnten and Steiermark, and in the Hungarian counties of Vas and Zala.
  • 6. Economic system of Slovenia. Government and society: constitutional framework, local government, justice, political process, main political parties.
  • 7. Cultural life, daily life and social customs (major holidays), the arts, architecture, cultural institutions, media and publishing. Education system: universities, schools in the ethnically mixed regions, research institutes.

One two-hours lecture per fortnight.
Assessment methods
Written and oral assessment: test, discussion in small groups. To receive credits students will be required to have no more than two absences.
