- Course objectives
- Why some publicities are popular because they hit the nail on the head, whereas others are refused? How can we explain that some journalists and politicians simply “know how to use their words” and some don’t? Current linguistic theories as well as the so called “Discourse theories” try to give a consistent response to this explanation challenge. They establish concepts and analytical instruments that depict language as an instrument of presenting and building truth claims, values and positions. Discourse has been theorized in many disciplines: the seminar offers an overview of the use of the notions “discourse” in humanities and social sciences and emphasizes especially the concepts “communication”, “rhetoric” and “scenography”. Their analytical challenges will be discussed through examples of publicities, internet spots, political debates and speeches reflecting some current issues bothering our societies. Further, the seminar will offer a discussion platform of the use of the presented theories in the practice of the discourse analysis.
