Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to define the etymology, to apply its methods and to demonstrate the etymological relations of chosen words in Indo-European languages.
Syllabus
  • 1. What is etymology? 2. Etymon, etymological meaning. 3. Deetymologization. 4. Diachronic method. 5. Ie. vowel and consonantal system. 6. Laryngeal theory. 7. Elementar relationship. 8. Method "Wörter und Sachen". 9. Kalks 10. Principle of semantic paralels and analogical development. 11. "popular" etymology. 12. Semantic changes 13. Tabu, tabu antiphrease, noa.
