Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand the contexts of crucial Hegelian interpretations in the political philosophy of 20th century; to read these interpretations in connection to particular moments of Hegel´s texts; critically analyze the role they played in constitution of contemporary intellectual atmosphere, and the extend to which they were formed by it.
Syllabus
  • Sociological perspective: Hegel as Bildungsbürger
  • Basic outline of Hegel´s political and social philosophy
  • Triggering of the Hegelian debate: controversy on totalitarianism (Popper, Russel vs. Kaufmann, Avineri)
  • French revolution controversy (Ritter): Burke – Payne, Wollstonecraft cleavage and its replication in 20th century
  • Anglosaxon interpretations of the reasonable state as political community (Avineri, Taylor, Pelczynski)
  • Hegel´s interpretation of the Antigone and feministic critique
  • End of history (Kojeve, Fukuyama)
