Course objectives
The aim of the course of Linguistics I is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of the syntax of the Portuguese language. Students should be able to define basic terms of a Luzo-Brazilian conception of syntax, similar to the “Valention syntax”. and the generative syntax that uses the terminological system of the Brazilian traditional syntax. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic syntactic and stylistic phenomena and identify the deviations from the standard. He or she will be able justify and bring serious arguments to support his or her thesis. Eventually, he or she will be able to propose a solution in accord with the standard. When analyzing particular texts and exercises(not only in the tree modulations but also in the algorithmic and linear form. Another objective of the seminar is a syntactic analysis of the authentic Portuguese linguistic material – identification of the phrase immediate constituents), he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. The last part of the seminar is focused on the elaboration of selected syntactic schemes – Input language competence according to Common European Framework: A1. Output language competence according to Common European Framework: C2.
