- Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to get an outlook of the main authors, peridos and tendencies in spanish theatre of 20th and 21st century;
to understand the specific themes and forms of this theatre. - Syllabus
- 1. Spanish theatre at the early 20th century: Realism.
- Reading: Jacinto Benavente, La malquerida (1913).
- 2. Innovators and dissidents. Avantgarde against realism.
- Readings: Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Luces de Bohemia (1920); Federico García Lorca, Así que pasen cinco años (1931).
- 3. After-war period. Bourgeois and humorous theatre.
- Reading: Miguel Mihura: Tres sombreros de copa (1932/52).
- 4. Social theatre.
- Readings: Antonio Buero Vallejo: Historia de una escalera (1949); Alfonso Sastre: Escuadrón hacia la muerte.
- 5. Forbidden, underground and independent theatre.
