- Course objectives
- After finishing the course students:
- understand the specifics of memoir literature;
- are able to recognize general information from lectures in selected texts;
- are familiar with potential interpretative approaches;
- verify acquired skills in individual interpretations of chosen texts;
- deepen their interpretative skills.
Lecture analyzes the characteristics of literature of memoirs and the place of memoirs in the genre system (among non-fiction, fiction and journalism)and the development and changes of the genre since 16th century. It explains also the characteristic of the most important works. - Syllabus
- The characteristics of the literature of memoirs and the place of the memoirs in the genre system (among non-fiction, fiction and journalism). The development and changes of the genre since the 16th century. The characteristics of the most important works. The Czech literature of memoirs since the end of the 16th century till the end of the 17th century. Its characteristics (between the chronicle and the memoirs, between the non-fiction and the belles-lettres), its major representants. The literature of memoirs at the turn of the 18th and the 19th century (F.J. Vavák, F.M. Pelcl). The literature of memoirs in the 19th century (J. Kollár, Fr. Palacký, J. Jungmann, A. Kavalírová, J.V. Frič, K. Světlá etc.). The literature of memoirs since the beginning of the 20th century till the World War Two(J.S. Machar, J.Herben, A. Jirásek, J. Holeček). The literature of memoirs after the World War Two : the topics concerning the avant-garde, the war, the concentration camps ; the memoirs of the actors, of the sportsmen. The characteristics of the literature of memoirs at the turn of the 20th and the 21st century and their particularities, the trend leading to the commerciality and the scandal-oriented literature.

- The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge.

- The lecture is terminated by the colloquium. For the colloquium students have to bring the list of the reading material of their own choice.
