Course objectives
The course introduces the students to the biblical kontext of J. A. Komenský’s most famous work, The Labyrinth of the Universe and the Paradise of the Heart. The commented fading of the text during this course focuses not only on clasically emphasized religious fiction of the text but it also point sout its fiction aesthetic. The teacher will, together with the students, apply the means of literky criticism, which are adequate for the inquiry of old literature but can aslo be applicable to modern texts.The students after finishing the course will be able to: work with various semantic plans of the work, understand the principle of an allegorical exegesis, apply hermeneutic methods to the text’s analysis, uncover the semantic kontext of the text’s architecture.
Syllabus
  • The acrchitecture of Labyrinth, the principle of labyrinth and the character of a pilgrim in Medieval art. Cognitive and aesthetic functions in Komenský’s Labyrinth; the categories of seing, vision and knowledge. The meaning of moves in Labyrinth. The tradition of allegorical exegesion and Dante; The Labyrinth of the Universe and Paradise of the Heart from the perspective of exegesion. Komenský’s sources: biblical topics and their adaptation; Evangelist, Song of Songs and Apocalypsis in Labyrinth. Characters of Labyrinth; stopping down in the universe and the ibdeals of the society of invisible Christians. Metamorphosis of the pilgrim, religious and initiative meanings of Labyrint. Text as an object of cognition and text as a means of cognition. The possibilities of useage of the critical approaches introduced during the course.
