Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is an introducing based on authentic medieval sources. The various headings (organization structure, design and structural analysis , the symbolism of religious buildings and building parts, cornerstones in the liturgy and consecration of the church), students will be led through interpretation and analysis of texts of contemporaries (i.e. builders or through historical evidence) to consideration upon the questions of the practical side of engineering (civil works organization and construction of building elements), or towards the symbolic and theological grasp of architecture (interpretation of building elements in terms of medieval exegesis). The aim of the seminar is based on reading of contemporary texts.
Syllabus
  • 1. The organization of the building and its construction - construction foreman and manager (education - artes liberales , artes mechanicae ) - craftsmen on site (their activities) - transport of materials for construction - spolia: definition, the question of their re-use in construction (Rome, Montecassino , Aachen , Paris , Pisa
  • 2. The design, structural analysis, principles of measurement in the Middle Ages - the principles of measurement in medieval (ancient patterns: Vitruvius , Isidore of Seville , reception Vitruviova work in the Middle Ages ) - the arch and vault systems
  • 3. Parts of the religious symbolism of buildings and building components - facade - columns ( allegorical conception of the building, theological interpretation) - the symbolism of medieval architecture
  • 4. Laying of the foundation stones, consecration of the church liturgy - the sovereign participation in important foundation - the establishment of the exact form of the liturgy and the laying of the cornerstones of the consecration of the church ? - Transfer of titular saints relics into the newly founded buildings
