Course objectives
The course introduces to the history of the Enlightenment theatre in Bohemia and Moravia. At the end of the course students will be able to: explain the influence of the European Enlightenment theatre to the professional theatre in Bohemia and in Moravia; identify the specifics of the theatre in the context of the Enlightenment reforms; analyse the situation of the Czech professional theatre at the end of the 18th century; describe the differences of German and Czech professional theatre; understand the attempts of Czech Enlightenment scholars to create the national theatre culture.

  • 1. Introduction. 2. Historical context – 18th century. 3. The Enlightenment. 4. European theatre reforms. 5. The influence of Hamburg and Vienna. 6. The Enlightenment directors of the Municipal theatre in Brno. 7. The Goldoni season in the theatre of Kotce. 8. Nostic Theatre in Prague. 9. Patriotic theatre of Bouda. 10. Patriotic theatre of Hyberns. 11. Theatre as a national institution. 12. Summary, conclusion.

Teaching methods
Theoretical preparation – lecture, discussion. Individual preparation – reading of texts. The lectures are given in Czech, students are expected to have a solid command of the Czech language.
