Course objectives
The aim of the lecture is to give a short overview of the history of the literature written in German from the beginning of the 20th century till nowadays. The central topics of this course are the great German authors of the 1st half of the 20th century, Austrian modern literature, Modern Prague German Literaure, exile authors of the years 1933 - 1945, post-war literature in the Federal Republic of Germany, authors from the German Democratic Republic, literary development in Austria and in Switzerland, the latest literature in Germany.;
At the end of the course the student acquires knowledge of the German written literature in the years 1890 - 1990 and he/she will be able to discuss this literature in fluent German.

  • P 1 Definition of the notion literature in German language (deutschsprachige Literatur), periodization of the literature written in German in the 20th century.
  • P 2 Great German authors of the 1st half of the 20th century, literature of the Weimar Republic
  • P 3 Austrian modern literature and Austrian literature of the interbellum
  • P 4 Modern Prague German Literaure, literature written in German on the Czech and Moravian territory
  • P 5 Literary situation in Germany in the years 1933-1945, Nazi literature, literature of the so-called inner emigration
  • P 6 Exile literature in the years 1933-1945
  • P 7 Post-war literature in Germany in the years 1945-1949
  • P 8 Austrian post-war literature
  • P 9 Literature in Switzerland and the specifics of the Swiss literary situation
  • P 10 Swiss German literature of the second half of the 20th century
