- Course objectives
- The alphabetical Greek dialects are mainly treated in this lecture. The lecture also serves as an introduction into the historical grammar and language history of Greek. The lecture is intended for students of Greek and Latin philology, but also interested students from other disciplines of antiquity are welcome. At the end of this course the students should be able to describe the peculiarities of the Greek dialects in phonology, morphology and syntax; identify the Greek dialects; to understand the main causes giving birth to various dialects; to demonstrate the literary use of dialects.
- Syllabus
- After a short introduction into Mycenaean Greek the alphabetical Greek dialects are mainly treated in this lecture. The following themes will be object of the lecture: 1. the dialectal subdivision of Greek and the peculiarities of the Greek dialects in phonology, morphology and syntax; 2. the attestation of Greek dialects in inscriptions; 3. the specific literary use of the different dialects (for example the Ionic prose of science, the Aeolian lyric poetry, the Doric language of the chorus passages of tragedy).

- Type of tuition: seminars. Discussed phenomena are demonstrated on passages from ancient Greek texts (both inscriptional and literary). Course completion requirement: submission of a paper on the characteristic features of individual Greek dialectal groups.
