Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to obtain the basic knowledge of the French, Italian and Spanish literature from the beginnings to the end of 19th century.
Specially, they will be able to answer the questions concerning the relationships between the particular national literatures and to nominate examples, as well as those concerning their contribution to the esthetic development of particular genres and periods.

  • 1. FRENCH LITERATURE. Introduction. Middle Ages (Chansons de geste. Court poetry. Theater. Eustache Deschamps, Charles d'Orléans, Francois Villon). Renaissance (Francois Rabelais, Pierre de Ronsard, Michel de Montaigne; P. de Ronsard.) Reading: Ronsard: Les Amours.
  • 2. Baroque. Classicism (Pierre Corneille, Moliére, Jean Racine). Reading: Phedre.
  • 3. 18th century. Enlightenment, encyclopedism. (Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau, Beaumarchais, Lesage, Marivaux.) Reading: Jacques le Fataliste.
  • 4. Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism. (Hugo, Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Musset, Vigny, Stendhal, Flaubert, Balzac, Daudet, Maupassant, Zola.) Reading: Le Rouge et le noir.
  • 5. Symbolism and decadence. Avant-garde. (Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine, Mallarmé, Apollinaire, Breton, Eluard) Reading: Les Fleurs du mal. Les Champs magnetiques.
  • 6. The first part of the 20th century. (Traditional, revolutionary and humanistic novel. Existencialism. Theatre of the Absurd.) Reading: A la recherche du temps perdu.

  • 8. ITALIAN LITERATURE. Introduction. Middle Ages. Duecento. First literary texts in "volgare". Dolce stil nuovo. The beginnings of trecento. Dante Alighieri.

Teaching methods
The course is provided as lectures. Students are required to attend the lectures regulary. Apart from that, regular home-reading of particular chapters or the whole works from the list of reading (available at the beginning of the course) in the Czech translation is required.
Assessment methods
The recommended reading will be part of the exam at the end of the second semester. The first semester is concluded with a Literary History test.
