Course objectives
This e-learning course covers a broad range of topics and research fields related to the notions “culture“, “literature“ and “context“ and the relation between them. The course consists of 12 units. The first two chapters present a broad introduction to thinking about culture together with the relevant concepts. The topics dealt with in detail: the cultural model of Hofstede; the concepts “image“, “construction of images“, “imagology“; the relation between language, culture and intercultural communication; the notions “comparativity“ and “contrastivity“. The remaining eight units deal with literature topics and topics related to literature theory that are brought into close connection with the issues of culture and culture studies. The key notions are exemplified by the notions from the world of literature and comprise i.a. forms of reception (and reception studies), cultural identity, interculturality and multiculturality; cultural transfer; influence and intertextuality; the relation between culture studies and literature science; exposition of the notion context and its implications for literature and culture. Each unit consists of a main text, a compulsory reading text (a scientific article or a fragment from a book), one or two facultative texts and a test on the main text of the unit and on the compulsory reading.
