Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to characterize the period of modern and avant-garde art, include the work of theatre modernist and avant-garde artists into historical context respecting the changes of European civilization at the turn of the 19th and 20th century (modern science, industrialization of the society, change of the relationship to the body) and to relate to the other kinds of art.

  • 1. Historical context - change of European society 2. Utopian vision and the position of the art in the new society 3. The period of modernist experiments (till 1918) 4. Turn to pragmatism of the avant-garde (after 1918)
