- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The lecture is focused on cinemas of selected countries of Southeastern Europe under communist rules. We will study arthouse cinema as well as popular genres and propaganda movies.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
be acquainted with typical genres of Balkan cinemas
understand local star systems
interpret hidden and subversive meanings in watched films
recognize their aesthetic value
decode elements of nationalism and propaganda. - Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to national cinemas of the Balkans.
- 2. The beginnings of the Bulgarian cinema, poetic realism, the sixties.
- 3. The migration cycle, epic movies on 1300th anniversary of the first Bulgarian state.
- 4. The beginnings of the Romanian cinema, the sixties, genre movies. 5. The generation of the seventies.
- 6. The beginnings and the specifics of Yugoslav film industry, partisan movies.
- 7. How the „novi film“ became a „black wave“.
- 8. The seventies, the Prague school.
- 9. Cinema of the Albania.
